Dionysus is the Greek god associated with drunkenness, festivity and religious ecstasy. To me, these are the qualities that classical music embodies. When done right, this music is visceral, overwhelming and makes us feel things that nothing else can make us feel.

Unfortunately, I see classical music being done wrong all too often. Music is most affecting when we focus on the basics. Excellent phrasing, clarity of texture and good style are all it takes to deliver a great performance. However, many conductors try to do more than is necessary. As a result, the music loses its impact.

The DCO’s mission is to deliver performances that embody the Dionysian qualities described above by focusing on basic musical virtues. We hope that you will pay us a visit.
